Andrew Gryf Paterson (Finland):
Pixelache Helsinki: Developments in Peer-learning, Diversity and Sustainability
This paper/presentation presents recent developments at Pixelache Helsinki, a trans-disciplinary platform for experimental art, design, research and activism, based in Helsinki, Finland. An annual festival has been organised since 2002, for many years presented as a festival of electronic arts and subcultures. However, in recent years the subjects promoted and presented by the non-profit cultural organisation has diversified and engaged increasingly with sustainability and environmental topics. Furthermore, ongoing projects and an around-the-year education and outreach programme has shifted the main mode of production towards smaller-scaled gatherings, experimental research, and peer-learning based processes. As a component in this shift, the informal educational programme, named Pixelversity, has engaged with a variety of subjects including circuit bending, waste and recycling, alternative economics, appropriate technologies, urban activism and neighbourhood skills, environmental data gathering, aswell as new event formats for online exchange and communication. The Pixelversity programme has also developed an agenda of supporting regional exchange, especially including practitioners and researchers from neighbouring countries including Estonia, Latvia and NW Russia. Communicating these activities brings new challenges for the organisation. The paper/presentation will conclude with a vision of cultural and educational organising which focuses on trans-disciplinary practice and research, as way of working towards sustainability issues and eco-geographic cooperation.
